Following his fastest lap in FP1, Hamilton took the top spot once more in second free practice at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Rain poured down upon the principality on Thursday afternoon, leaving the streets of Monaco empty with just water dripping across the circuit for almost an hour. In what turned out to be very limited running, Lewis Hamilton once again posted the fastest lap of the session with Nico Rosberg improving heavily to claim second place.
The second free practice session came in vast contrast to the morning session, where Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest time while Nico Rosberg slumped down in P9. Instead the afternoon session began with a red flag following Roberto Merhi crashing his Manor-Marussia on the exit of the famous Monaco tunnel and bringing the early running to an abrupt end.
Once his car had been cleared from the circuit and the red flag period was over, drivers returned to the streets and the Mercedes duo battled for the fastest lap. In the end it was Lewis Hamilton taking the early lead in the session with the fastest lap of the day.
But rain soon poured down upon Monte Carlo, drenching the circuit. This caused the teams to hold their men in the garages for the best part of an hour, before the track eventually dried enough for some intermediate running in the final 10 minutes.
With the intermediate tyres fitted, the drivers were only able to lap the circuit around 20 seconds off the early dry-weather pace and the running order remained the same come the chequered flag.
Drivers and teams now take Friday off before the action continues on Saturday morning with final free practice.
