More rain and limited grip as Hamilton tops FP2 at the Australian Grand Prix

Second free practice at the Australian Grand Prix topped by Lewis Hamilton.

Two from two in 2016 as Lewis Hamilton tops FP2 at the Australian Grand Prix. But while Hamilton topped the second practice session of the year, Nico Rosberg found himself watching on from the Mercedes garage after an early crash cost him his running.

Another rain shower had fallen across the Albert Park circuit before the start of the second practice session, leaving everyone in their garages when FP2 began.

When the field eventually trickled out of the pits, Nico Rosberg showed everyone why the teams prefer not to run in mixed conditions when he lost the rear at turn seven, finding the wall.

Nico’s collision with the barrier saw the new Mercedes front wing become detached from the nose of his car. Unfortunately for the team, this was also a new part that they do not have many back ups of – which was why they chose not to run it in FP1. The team was also unable to have Rosberg drive back to the pits as the FIA requested he parked up due to spreading debris on the track.

Hamilton on the other hand did not enter the action until after an hour. But when the Brit took to the drier track, he leapt to the top spot straight away to dislodge Raikkonen.

Meanwhile at Force India Hulkenberg made his way into second position, four tenths down on Hamilton, while Perez found himself running over the grass at turn one. Incidentally, Perez had previously set the fastest first sector of anyone before later catching a big slide at turn 12.

Ricciardo and Sainz saw the Red Bull branded teams finish highly in the session in fourth and fifth. Followed by the McLaren duo of Alonso and Button.

Vettel found himself 1.3 seconds off of his team-mate’s time with Kimi in third and Seb in eighth place.

New boys Haas ended their first day in 11th and 13th place with Gutierrez leading Grosjean. While Wehrlein lead Haryanto in the Manor day one battle.

Williams meanwhile chose not to run in FP2 as they believed Saturday’s running would be dry and therefore more useful to their programme. But their drivers did get a lap in, as they were sent out to carry out pit stop practice.
