Second free practice at the Japanese Grand Prix topped by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.

Forty-five minutes of delay were met with eventual running as five drivers posted a timed lap at Suzuka, and a further nine carrying out exploratory runs. With Lewis Hamilton fastest of those by eight-tenths of a second to Force India’s Esteban Ocon – the first driver to test the standing water resting at the first and final corners.

A race into the unknown as Formula One celebrated the 10th Singapore Grand Prix with the very first night race in wet conditions. A new prospect for the 20 man field, unsure of what tyres to start on and whether the weather would create glare under the lights. Though the drama came when Vettel pinched Verstappen into Raikkonen to take the trio out before the first corner. Promoting Hamilton into a lead he mastered to move 28-points clear of the Ferrari.

Chinese GP | FP1 stopped then topped by Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen tops first free practice for Red Bull at the Chinese Grand Prix.

With a thick layer of cloud smothering the Shanghai International Circuit, the red flags were out and the session was stopped for 40-minutes. But when the cloud lifted, Verstappen went fastest on the wet track. Edging Massa by 1.5-seconds before the cloud returned and closed the designated local hospital.

But when Raikkonen crashed out 10 seconds into a restart to instigate a red-flag, race control’s safety concerns were warranted. Yet when the race got going, more hearts bled for Massa and fans cheered for Verstappen – but it was Lewis Hamilton controlling the race for his first Brazilian victory.
