Ever since Russia first gained a championship Grand Prix in 2014, only Mercedes drivers have reached the chequered flag in first position during qualifying or the race. But that all came to an end today, as Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen both out-qualified the Silver Arrows to claim Ferrari’s first front row lock out for nine years.

Vettel continues to set the pace in FP2 at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
The floodlights flickered on, Ferrari finished fettling and Formula One refuelled for the final 90-minutes of Friday running. Yet when those 90-minutes came to an end, Ferrari continued to head the field as supersoft tyres could not demote Vettel. A late issue, however, took the shine off Ferrari’s day.

As the sun beat down on the Bahrain desert, Formula One hit the track. With drivers pounding around in the mid-day heat, while Bernie Ecclestone enjoyed the paddock as he made his return. Witnessing Vettel set the pace in the weekend opener, as Mercedes watched on happily after being ahead of schedule.
